Jaigarh Fort, Jaipur

Popularly known as the 'Victory Fort', Jaigarh Fort is an important tourist destination in Jaipur. Erected in the middle of the hill of Eagle, the fort is approached by a steep road which brings you face to face with the main entrance called Dungar Darwaza. Once you have reached the fort look back at the city below, you will get a different picture of it. The fort was constructed with the purpose of cushioning Amer. It was built by Maharaja Man Singh I. Later some additions were made by Jai Singh II. The fort has beautiful palaces.

The most interesting thing in the fort is the Jaivana which is the largest cannon on wheels in the world. It weighs approximately 50 tons. People say that it was never used in any battle but once the Maharaja tested it and the result was the formation of a lake at the place (38 km away from the fort) where the ball of the cannon fell. The fort also houses huge underground water tanks which are three in number. The largest one has the capacity of storing 60, 00,000 gallons of water. According to the legend this tank is a home to a hidden treasure but when the Indian Government looked for it nothing was found.
